Media bias is a subject worth special focus at this juncture given the outrageous comments made about Andrew Breitbart’s death by liberal talk show host John “Sly” Sylvester of Madison’s WTDY, four days ago on March 2.
Similar to the feeding frenzy that erupted last year as the liberal mass media repeatedly attempted, without any basis, to link the shooting of Rep. Gabby Giffords to Tea Party rhetoric, currently the liberal mass media (both in Wisconsin and nationwide) is obsessed with criticizing the language chosen by Rush Limbaugh to describe political activist, Sandra Fluke, who appeared before Members of Congress as an advocate of free birth control.
By contrast, to date there has been no liberal mass media condemnation — or even mention — of the far more outrageous comments Sylvester made on his show about Breitbart the morning after the announcement of Breitbart’s death.
Sylvester spent half an hour of his March 2 program describing how happy he was that Breitbart had been “hauled off to the slab.” Sylvester was blunt: “I’m glad he’s dead!” He compared his happiness in hearing of the sudden death of Breitbart, a married father of four, to his happiness of hearing of the death of American traitor-terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki and mass-murderer North Korean dictator Kim jon-Il.
Not only was Sylvester glad that Breitbart was dead, he vowed to make sure that Breitbart stayed dead, through desecration of Breitbart’s graves. Instead of urinating on Breitbart’s grave, Sylvester explained, “I’m gonna pour Roundup on his grave so there’s no chance he ever comes back to life, and I can kill him like the weed that he was.” For a three-minute clip with Sylvester’s most outrageous comments, click here (transcript of Sylvester’s comments posted in video notes):
When Sylvester finished with his vile half-hour tirade against a defenseless (because deceased) ideological enemy, he then posted the audio (stripped of commercials) in the permanent audio collection on archive.org, for all the world to hear, forever, here. He also posted on his blog (update: link now stale; see next post) the following rant :
Sylvester is hardly a nobody. Although from the content of his rant someone outside Madison who’s never heard of him would assume he’s a crackpot with an internet radio show boasting maybe a dozen fans, in fact Sylvester is employed by WTDY, an FCC-licensed radio station on which he has hosted “Sly in the Morning,” apparently the most popular liberal talk show in the capitol city of Wisconsin, for 30 years. Due in part to his longevity and loyal hard-core-left listener base, Sylvester enjoys the support of many advertisers (see bottom right, here), and Democrat politicians, union bosses, and liberal mainstream media journalists, who regularly appear on his program. Thus how the advertisers, politicians, union bosses, and journalists react to Sly’s comments will tell us much about the standards of civility (or lack of standards) embraced by the hard left in Wisconsin.
