Yesterday conservative Milwaukee talk show host Charlie Sykes hosted a panel discussion on his regular “Sunday Insight With Charlie Sykes” program on Milwaukee television station TMJ4 (NBC). The program included a discussion of the vile comments by liberal Madison hatetalker John “Sly” Sylvester about Andrew Brietbart, and about other controversial comments in the past. A complete video of the program can be viewed here.
For your convenience here is a video of the portion of the show which addressed Sylvester:
And here is a full transcript.
Of particular interest, neither of the prominent liberals who appeared on the program offered any defense of Sylvester.
Democrat Lynne De Bruin, who is currently serving as a Milwaukee County Supervisor, when asked about whether there’s a double standard, with Sylvester being treated more leniently than conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh, remarked: “I think a jerk is a jerk regardless of whether he’s far right or far left. And I think what’s bothering me about this is that all of these folks should be condemned for what they’re saying — they should all lose sponsors. ” She characterized Sylvester’s remarks as “absolutely appalling.”
Mikel Holt, associate publisher of the Milwaukee Community Journal, Wisconsin’s largest African-American newspaper, suggested that politicians who appear on Sylvester’s show ought to be questioned about his past controversial remarks: “[S]omebody might ask, at some point, you know, Kathleen Falk [leading Democrat candidate for governor] is before Sly, appearing on his show. Are you condoning his racist remarks? I mean, I would ask that question; I wouldn’t have any problem asking that.”
Brian Simka of Media Trackers chimed in on the importance of this point, and on the failure to date of the guests who regularly appear on Sylvester’s show to take a position on this controversy:
Sly Sylvester is a guy that’s respected not only by the Democratic establishment but by the mainstream media. John Nichols of the Capital Times is a regular contributor to his show. Dan Bice of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel regularly goes on that show. None of these individuals has come out and condemned Sly Sylvester for comments that were reprehensible!
